Duduka Da Fonseca
Duduka Da Fonseca was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and began playing
the drums at the age of thirteen. At fifteen, he was appearing on television,
and also performing and recording with top Brazilian musicians: Cesarius
Alvim, Tenório Jr, Haroldo Mauro Jr, Alfredo Cardim,
Edson Lóbo, João Donato, Edison Maciel, Nivaldo
Ornelas, Mário Adnet, Ion Muniz, Paulo Jobim, Jacques
Morelenbaum and Grupo Mandengo (Mauro Senise, Barrozinho,
Raul Mascarenhas, Tony Botelho), among others. In 1975 Duduka moved to New York establishing numerous Brazilian Jazz
groups. One of these groups, Brazilian Express, appeared on a National
PBS television special. The New York Samba Band Performed at
the Blue Note, Fat Tuesday's and the Village Gate, among
many other clubs in the United States. The Brazilian Jazz All Stars
featured artists Bob Mintzer,

Duduka is a co-leader of Trio da Paz, nominated as the best new
Latin Jazz group of 1993, and winner of the Jazz Journalists Association
awards, as the best Brazilian Jazz album of 2002 (Partido Out, Malandro
Records). Duduka has recorded and performed with artists such as Antonio Carlos
Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Herbie Mann, Claudio Roditi, Joanne Brackeen, Eddie
Gomez, John Scofield, Joe Henderson, Gerry Mulligan, Jorge Dalto,
Dom Salvador, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Emily Remler, Nana Vasconcelos, Nancy Wilson, Slide Hampton, Kenny
Barron,
Tom Harrell, Wayne Shorter and many others. Since 1984, Duduka has been a member of the faculty at the Drummer's
Collective in NYC, conducting workshops and private lessons. He has
also conducted workshops in Europe, Japan and Brazil. Duduka is the
author of an instructional book and tape or cd "Brazilian Rhythms for
Drumset", published by Manhattan Music/Warner Bros. Publications.
In 2003 Duduka Da Fonseca's first solo album "Samba Jazz Fantasia" (Malandro
Records) featured an incredible list of all stars of the contemporary
jazz scene. The album was nominated for the Grammy as Best Latin Jazz Album of
2003.
