Jorge Amorim was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil in 1964 and spent his early years playing afro-brazilian percussion at Umbanda religious ceremonies and was a member of several samba schools. He studied at the Pro-Art music school in Rio and proceeded to pursue his musical career playing and recording with many top artists. He lived in Europe for 9 years; performing, recording and teaching drums and percussion to adults and children in Germany, Switzerland and France. In Paris he performed with Baden Powel, Archie Shepp, Graham Haynes, Sivuca, Don Um Romão, and others. He has also performed in many jazz festivals including the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Pori Jazz Festival (Finland), the Leverkusen Jazz Festival, Saalfelden (in Austria), and many others. Since 1997, Jorge settled in New York, were he has performed and recorded with acclaimed
jazz musicians Al Foster, Graham Haynes, Lonnie Plaxico, Roswell Rudd, Vernon Reid, Omar Hakim, and many others. Jorge has participated in records with Graham Haynes - The Griot's Footsteps and Transition; Hank Jones and Cheik Tidiane Seck - Sarala; and others. He released his first solo CD, Ritual of Music in 1996, presenting strong original Afro-Brazilian contemporary music that pays tribute to his roots, freedom and diversity. In 2001 he participated in a big tour of Europe (France, Germany and Switzerland) and Tahiti with musicians from Paris and Senegal featuring Doudou N' Diaye Rose, master drummer from Senegal. Afterwards Jorge went to Rio de Janeiro to develop a project of instrumental Brazilian music. In 2002 and 2003 Jorge performed with Graham Haynes in a tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim at Symphony Space and BAM Cafe. He has also performed with African hip-hop pioneer King Angelo and Michael Franti at S.O.B's, with the Frank Lacy Big Band at the Blue Note, and with Jay Rodrigues of the Groove Collective. Other projects include the production with Hank Schroy of a DK Dyson record in Salvador, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the upcoming album Orixás.
