Harvey Wirht was born in Paramaribo, Suriname and at an early age was exposed by his family to
the country’s unique culture and diverse rhythms. He began formal instruction at the VMS Music School, and by
the time he graduated from high school, was earning a living as a drummer playing for dance bands and performing major events
like the Caribbean Broadcasting Union Song Festival and the Suriname Popular Song Festival.
In the Fall of 1991, Harvey moved to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music. Not long thereafter, Harvey’s
versatility endeared him to many of Boston’s bandleaders, such as Sunsteel, A-No-Ne, The Teresa Inês Group, Culture
Jam, The Jazz Composers Alliance, Mango Blue, The Izzy Rozen Quartet and The Either Orchestra.
Harvey has relocated to New York and has added performances with the Joanne Brackeen Trio, The John
|
Benitez Trio, John Chicai, Fra Fra Sound and David Murray, just to name a few, to his ever-growing
resume.
